Design, connection and connection

Samsung has expanded its work on Android, which transforms the system interface and makes it similar to what they have seen on Windows and MacOS.

There is a desktop, a task panel and a menu with programs. If we talk about the Android system, and not about the operating system, then the user can work with almost all the programs that are installed on his smartphone, and also deny access to all his files.

How can you work with a smartphone as a computer? Almost everything appeared. It’s important to note that not all programs support Samsung DeX. In an hour of working with DeX, I had no problem using the Chrome browser, sending Gmail, working with documents in Google Docs, editing photos from Snapseed, and watching YouTube. However, not all programs support the robot in this mode. These are not scalable in any way, and the only thing that can be done is to expand this window from a vertical position to a horizontal one, so that there is more information in width. Moreover, even if there are any functional programs for Android, they still sacrifice desktops.

When a smartphone connects to the docking station at the time of entry, you can receive it directly in the interface, for which you need drone-free headphones. You can use the same method to make a phone call without turning on the device for DeX.

The keyboard and mouse work with the docking station without any problems, however, we are not able to switch between them - through the combination Shift and Spacebar. However, when a keyboard is connected, Apple has added a standard layout for MacOS.

As for the hardware platform, then Samsung’s flagships will provide the year’s high level of productivity. The animation in the DeX interface is not very smooth, but the animation is not clicky and allows you to work comfortably. If you use DeX with the Galaxy S8 or S8+, it becomes clear that 4 GB of RAM is the minimum for such a system. The Note8, which has 6 GB of RAM, is a little more comfortable.

The designation of the smartphone as a “system unit” could not but lead to high pressure, and, obviously, to the heating of the case. But Samsung, under the control of Microsoft, has solved this problem. In DeX, there is a fan that cools the smartphone during the hour of work. And although he is not great, he still manages his tasks and does so quietly. After many years of working with the docking station, the device becomes completely cold, which also requires the 10-nanometer Exynos processor.

As the Samsung DeX concept looks good, in general, such a system is suitable for simple tasks. If the hardware platform of a smartphone is already practically ready for implementation on a PC, then the software will require further development. What Samsung has managed to implement in DeX is truly amazing, even though the Galaxy S8 or Note8 can be turned into something like a desktop computer. The dream of turning a smartphone into a full-fledged Windows computer has been around for a long time, but it has always been on the road to its implementation. It goes without saying that Microsoft wants to turn smartphones into full-fledged computers, Samsung is developing a similar project, but it is stalling, as marketers outbid engineers, as was the case at Motorola before. According to marketers, the market is not yet ready, and there is plenty of room for such devices. Microsoft respects that the hour has come and is ready to adapt MS Office for Android, which works in computer mode. And Samsung cared about what was enough to give the project a green light and create an accessory that would turn the company's flagship into a full-fledged computer, at least at a low level. This is how the DeX docking station was born, which can already be called the most successful product in this category, since it is sold like hot cakes and the company simply does not know how to produce them.

The idea of ​​a DeX docking station is simple and clear: you connect peripheral devices to the station and you can add a large monitor, keyboard, bear, printer, external drive and much more to your phone. Let's figure out at once how it works.

We connect the DeX station to the phone, first setup

The small box contains a docking station and nothing else, and to connect to a monitor or TV you will need a standard HDMI cable, which you will need to buy separately. There will be no problems with this, such cables are sold in most stores.

The docking station is quite large, it has a cover that can be screwed in, under which there is a USB Type C connector, we can install a smartphone here, currently only the Galaxy S8/S8+ is supported, and the new Note will be available later.

The living station operates through the original charging device that comes with your phone, a USB Type C connector on the case. The docking station has a moisture-cooling fan, which can hardly be called noisy; a little bit at all. The presence of cooling is important, since in some modes the phone may heat up, otherwise overheating is turned off.

The case has two full-fledged USB connectors (USB 2.0), to which you can connect any peripherals, such as a keyboard, a mouse or a flash drive, as well as a hard drive. As a rule, life is needed for any portable device, such as a laptop or similar technology. An HDMI connector is required to connect the docking station to a monitor or TV, and there is no need for any special setup; the phone automatically detects the type of monitor. Unfortunately, there is one problem here - older monitors with 4:3 geometry work poorly, but the picture is optimized for widescreen TV displays, so it doesn’t look as good on older devices.

When connected for the first time, images are displayed on the screen, on which parts of the image are displayed, and you can adjust them yourself. On all my TVs and monitors the picture was displayed correctly initially.

When the phone is inserted into the docking station, it automatically starts charging, the picture on the screen freezes, and DeX mode begins to work. You can also select the mode to mirror the image from the smartphone screen, but the DeX mode will obviously not be available. This is the old, well-known mode, so I won’t complain about it, especially since all Samsung smart TVs support the same connection of smartphones via Wi-Fi.

Unfortunately, the connectors on the docking station are spread out in bulk, which is handy for connecting peripherals, but on the table they take up a lot of space.

In practice, you can connect a wireless keyboard to the docking station (you need to insert a USB dongle from the keyboard to one of the connectors) or connect the keyboard directly to your phone via Bluetooth. The other option is much more suitable for me, because it doesn’t require any wires and everything works the same way.

Looking at the accessories that we are looking for, I will say that almost all mice, keyboards, hard drives, etc. The printer can be connected directly to the station, but what's next? It’s easier to set up your devices via Android drivers; most current models support this option; I have everything set up this way.

There is also an Ethernet connector on the case, so you can connect the docking station to the middle, which will be valuable for corporate clients, since this option is important for them, but less useful for a home wireless station.

Let’s start using the DeX station – familiar programs on the monitor

When you install the interface on the monitor or TV in front of you, Windows will tell you that you have a status row at the bottom, where accessory shortcuts are displayed, and on the right side there are status icons, for example, battery charge, icon for screenshots, alarm signal and so on. On your desktop, you can create your own icons, which is very easy.

It is necessary to understand that the interface is designed for a computer, but before us is the very familiar Android. For example, you may not have a large number of open windows, but only those displayed on the screen are no longer active; others are recalled from memory, and they “freeze” in the same place in which they were located. So please don’t be amazed by such possibilities of plentiful tasks.

You can open a number of programs on the screen at the same time and work in them at the same time. It is important that you can use the file manager to drag and drop a file from an item on the fly; there are many standard programs that support this ability.

Even if you use DeX mode on your own computer, as there is no such thing, you will know what to do and how to do it.

In the menu you can select programs that work in DeX mode, including all Android programs, as well as bugs. So, you can launch games, but, for all that, you won’t be able to play, for example, Clash of Clans won’t work for me, but the Infinitode axis works miraculously. I couldn’t find any functionality in a Windows laptop, it’s all the same. The files themselves open, they are saved in MS, in a word, I don’t want to. For those who do not want to pay an upfront fee for MS Office, you can create other texts in another program from Samsung, which has text formatting, minimal capabilities of a text editor. It is more convenient for small texts, but for the same work, a written book is probably not suitable. The text is completely suitable for writing, there are no problems here.

I’ve been familiar with the DeX station for a long time, because everything at the presentation was clumsy, to say the least. I don’t know what was the reason, but in real life everything is even faster and faster. Moreover, you will not notice the usual troubles when working with important, important documents. It’s surprising to know that the processing of documents is done by the phone, not the computer.

And another surprising thing for me was that the first two years with DeX went to those that I tried to use in various supplements, believing that the stink doesn’t work at all. Alec died.

And for DeX, such a monitor is required, in other words, your TV can be it.

For corporate customers, a DeX station is simply a godsend, especially in companies that buy Samsung flagships for smartphones. You can create a work place at any time, and doctors who support the virtual desktop for Windows can also process all the necessary documents in another place (equally run all their Windows programs from the desktop, as on the original PC, you only need to connect before boundaries). In Europe, a number of great companies have already valued this accessory, because it saves them money in the time it takes to maintain essential services. But here it is necessary to understand that the pioneers are still talking about the mass adoption of such decisions in advance.

I have to say that this DeX station has a number of disadvantages. For example, if at any moment you forget that there is a phone in front of you, and you are guaranteed to forget, then you begin to trim the memory of the open player with movies, great documents and 30-40 bookmarks in Chrome. There is no improvement in the robot interface, but the battery cannot be charged, the charge freezes at the same point. If you want your phone to charge, download all programs from your desktop, so the system “freezes” and does not waste energy.

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to take such a station with you on trips, even if you, in addition to DeX, need an HDMI cable, a keyboard, a teddy bear, and all of this takes up a lot of space, it’s easier to take a laptop with you.

For example, I use the S8+ and use the Samsung droneless keyboard when traveling, but for me it’s a compromise, because it’s not handy due to the size. What are the benefits of robots?

I tested a non-commercial smartphone, the same DeX. By the hour of work, this connection was clearly not working at its best. The factory was at a standstill. The phone has not warmed up for 6 years. Possibly, this will prevent the battery from overheating.

For most everyday tasks, such as getting mail, watching videos on YouTube or scrolling through instant messengers, the pressure increases.
